League tag is a non-contact sport that offers a fantastic introduction to the rules and dynamics of rugby league without the physicality of tackling. It’s a popular alternative for players who want to enjoy the sport without the full impact of traditional rugby league tackles.
In league tag, teams aim to score tries, similar to regular rugby league, but instead of tackling opponents to stop their progress, players wear tags that are attached to their waist. The objective for the defending team is to grab or pull off the tag of the ball-carrier, simulating a tackle, before they can reach the try line.
Once a tag is removed, the ball is considered “dead,” and the play is stopped. League tag is an excellent way to teach the fundamentals of rugby league, including ball handling, passing, and strategic play, without the physical contact. It’s particularly popular in youth and junior leagues, as well as in mixed-gender competitions, as it encourages participation and skill development in a safe and enjoyable manner.
